May 18, 2003 Church volunteer, coach faces sex abuse charges By The Associated
Press PORTLAND - Numerous sex charges have been filed against a man who has worked with children as a coach, educational assistant and a church volunteer. Derrick A. Mayberry, 23, of Milwaukie was arrested at a Little League game after it was alleged that he had sexual contact with two girls, ages 13 and 15, he met in church. He was being held in the Justice Center Jail on charges of rape, sodomy and sex abuse. Bail was set at $485,000. He was arrested about a month after the two girls reported abuse and police started an investigation. Police have no evidence that Mayberry had inappropriate contact with children he met through Little League or at the school where he has worked as an educational assistant. Mayberry is a member and volunteer at New Beginnings Christian Center in Portland. In a statement, church leaders said none of the alleged activities occurred during a church event or on church property. They also said Mayberry has held no leadership position in the church.
